| Posting Summary: The University of Virginia Carter G. Woodson Institute for African American and African Studies invites applicants for an open-rank faculty (Assistant, Associate or Full Professor) position in science, technology, society, and the environment in sub-Saharan Africa. We are especially interested in applicants whose work focuses on the historical, cultural, sociopolitical, and environmental contexts out of which technological innovations and questions regarding environmental change in Africa emerge. We welcome applications from a range of fields, including but not limited to anthropology, sociology, geography, history, political science, African Studies, and Science and Technology Studies. Examples of desirable research foci include: the indigenization of technology as it relates to social, political economic, and cultural responses to environmental change; the role of environmental development NGOs; the intersections between indigenous knowledges and technologies and perceptions about global climate change, and such issues as ecological migration. We seek candidates who show exceptional accomplishment as scholars, teachers and mentors and who can offer broad courses that integrate interdisciplinary perspectives. Preference will be given to candidates who hold the rank of Associate or Full Professor, but we will also consider candidates at the advanced Assistant Professor level who have a proven record of scholarly engagement and publication. Candidates should demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching and to service. |
Review of applications will begin November 5, 2016. Priority will be given to applications received by November 26, 2016. However, the search will remain open until filled. The anticipated appointment start date is July 25, 2017. Applicants must have earned a Ph.D. in a relevant field at the time of application.
