Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) provides the educational outreach functions for Cornell University's role as New York State's Land Grant University. Programmatically, Cornell Cooperative Extension connects the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) and the College of Human Ecology (CHE) with 55 off-campus Associations, Integrated Pest Management, New York State Sea Grant, Area Specialists, and CCE New York City.
Harvest New York is an innovative Cornell Cooperative Extension team that focuses on workforce development and business expansion projects that increase profitability and investment in key sectors of New York's agriculture industry throughout the State. Harvest New York Specialists respond to emerging issues and develop new opportunities using the research of Cornell University (both in Geneva at Cornell AgriTech and the Ithaca campus), the resources of Cornell Cooperative Extension and relationships with partnering organizations statewide. The six project areas covered by Harvest New York are: Dairy Food Processing and Marketing, Local Food Distribution and Marketing, Urban Agriculture, Farm-Based Beverages, Emerging Crops, and Farm Strategic Planning.
What We Are Looking For
We are looking for an individual that excels at building relationships with multiple stakeholders to identify and address industry needs. Initiative and independence are also essential to success. This position moves comfortably across a wide geography and contributes to multiple teams while developing their own unique program. Someone who has an appreciation for agriculture in New York State and realizes the importance of building relationships with producers and processors. Experience working in crop production, marketing, regulatory interpretation and in developing educational programming.
Roles and Responsibilities as a member of the Harvest New York Specialist Team:
Provide leadership for planning and developing educational programs that emphasize the production and management of emerging crops.
Develop a formal program that supports the growth and expansion of industrial hemp, hops, grains for the local craft beverage or bakery industry, or other emerging crops in New York State.
Implement educational programs utilizing a variety of methods.
Deliver one-on-one consultations with key producers and industry partners.
Communicate evaluation results to program partners and funders.
Build and maintain effective relationships with the producers, consultants, and other industry representatives.
Participate in collaborative research projects with University and extension faculty and staff as well as other agencies and organizations.
Support communication efforts with stakeholders through production guides, newsletters, quarterly reports, news releases, evaluation plans, etc.
Responsible for day-to-day program operations and fiscal accountability.
Develop and pursue a self-development plan that will enhance efforts within the program.
This position is full-time (40 hours / week) and will be located in Broome County, New York. This is a one-year appointment with possible extension depending on funding and performance.
Bachelor's degree in Crop Science, Agronomy, Horticulture or related field with a demonstrated focus in agronomy and nutrient management and 3+ years of experience working in field crop, horticulture or other agricultural related industries or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience with pest management and disease issues of crops.
Demonstrated strong commitment to extension in support of the crops industry and a willingness to collaborate with other staff in a multi-disciplinary, integrated approach commitment to extension education in support of the crop industry.
Ability to collaborate with other University staff, extension and industry personnel, and commercial farms.
Proven organizational and time-management skills.
Effective written and verbal communication skills.
Strong interpersonal skills with proven ability to work with diverse audiences in group and one-on-one settings.
Participate in industry-based research in cooperation with commercial growers.
Strong commitment to quality service, collaborative decision making, teamwork, and communication is essential.
Experience that demonstrates sound judgment, creativity, management, and problem-solving skills and the ability to work well within a team of professionals.
Ability to plan ahead and anticipate potential issues, with a strong ability for multi-tasking.
Fundamental competence utilizing current technology as a management and program delivery tool (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access, Internet, Social Media, and Web development).
Must be able to meet the travel requirements of the position, including having reliable transportation or having and maintaining a valid New York State driver's license.
Must exercise sound and ethical judgment when acting on behalf of the University.
Master's Degree in Crop Science, Agronomy or related field.
Prior experience with crop production and management
Certified Crop Advisor.
New York Certified Pesticide Applicator License.
