The Department of Geography, Environment, and Spatial Sciences is looking for a well-rounded academic specialist who will supplement departmental needs in advising and teaching. The candidate will serve as the Department Undergraduate Academic Advisor on a 50% basis, and teach two (2) undergraduate courses per year in the area of Human Geography and administrate summer off-campus courses on a 40% basis, and assist with Outreach duties on a 10% basis. The successful candidate must have a strong work ethic, and the ability to work individually, and as part of a team, to increase the visibility of the Department and to explain the reasons why Geography, Environment, and Spatial Sciences is a promising career path.
Advise current undergraduate students majoring in Geography, Environment, and Spatial Sciences about course scheduling, degree requirements, and curriculum options as well as the university curriculum, alternative majors and possible careers.
Introduce students and prospective students to the Department and the field of Geography.
Advise incoming students on scheduling, degree requirements and careers by participating in all New Student Orientation (NSO) sessions, and represent the Department at academic major fairs, other recruiting events and student affairs activities throughout the year.
Meet with and respond to inquiries from potential MSU Geography majors and their families.
Work collaboratively with the Chair and department faculty to provide comprehensive advising service.
Interact with faculty and academic staff in the Office of Undergraduate Academic and Student Affairs at the College of Social Science, the Honors College, and other Colleges to resolve any issues.
Refer students as necessary to appropriate university offices and services.
Participate in departmental curriculum and faculty meetings, college-wide advisor meetings and professional development activities.
Masters -Geography or Social Science
Doctorate -Geography or Social Science
A master's degree in Geography or the Social Sciences, with experience teaching undergraduate students or high school students.
The qualified candidate must have strong oral and written communication skills, strong organizational skills, be detail oriented, have experience developing personal connections with a diverse group of students, colleagues, and the public, and have computer and software competencies.
PhD in Geography or the Social Sciences, with experience in a combination of the following: advising students at the university level, experience teaching undergraduate courses in Geography, experience as the advisor of a student club or organization, experience in teaching in and outreach to secondary schools; starting date of June 17, 2019.
