Broadwater Academy – Upper School Social Studies Teacher - Job Description
We are an independent Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12 school on Virginia’s Eastern Shore, one of the most pristine ecosystems on the Atlantic coast. We are a small community of learners, leaders, and environmental stewards. Our students gain a foundation of critical thinking skills that prepares them to succeed at our nation’s best colleges and beyond. Our teachers provide a nurturing, safe environment that encourages every student to reach for their highest potential.
We are seeking to fill a full-time teaching position in our Upper School within the Humanities Department, specifically an Upper School Social Studies teacher. Courses taught may include World Geography, AP World Geography, Economics, and Sociology.
Upper School teachers educate students typically in ninth through twelfth grade. Upper School teachers help students build on the fundamentals taught in middle school and prepare students for the more difficult curriculum they will face in college and beyond.
Upper School teachers typically do the following:
Plan lessons that teach students a subject, such as biology and history
Assess students to evaluate their abilities, strengths, and weaknesses
Teach lessons they have planned to an entire class or to smaller groups
Grade students’ assignments to monitor their progress
Communicate with parents about students’ progress
Work with students individually to help them overcome specific learning challenges
Prepare students for standardized tests
Develop and enforce classroom rules
Supervise students outside of the classroom—for example, at lunchtime or during detention
Successful candidates will possess a minimum of a bachelor's degree in education or the humanities and preferably have done at least one semester of student teaching. A teaching certificate is not required; however, candidates should have a plan to actively work towards achieving a certificate in Virginia.
Upper School teachers generally teach students from ninth to twelfth grades.
Teachers maintain websites to communicate with parents about students’ assignments, upcoming events, and grades. For their students, teachers may create websites or discussion boards to present information or to expand a lesson taught in class.
Upper School teachers may also coach sports teams and advise student clubs and groups, whose practices and meetings frequently take place before or after school.
Broadwater Academy is an equal opportunity institution. We offer employment opportunities for all persons without regard to race, color, religion, national origin, political affiliation, veteran status, gender, age, or sexual orientation and for all otherwise qualified persons with disabilities.
Bachelors or higher degree in Humanities; teaching experience preferred.
