The Seven Hills School seeks an energetic, experienced and team-oriented teacher of reading/language arts and social studies to work in the fifth grade at the Lotspeich Lower School.
Two fifth grade homeroom teachers work closely in semi-departmental structure, one teaching all the Language Arts and half the Social Studies (this position) and the other teaching all the Math and half the Social Studies. The homeroom teachers also work closely with subject specialists in art, music, drama, physical education, Spanish, and library and research skills.
The Language Arts role involves teaching reading comprehension, writing in several genres, grammar, vocabulary, and spelling. Social studies units include: geography and map skills, a history of exploration from Pytheus to Apollo 11, an interactive study of colonial America, and a study of the Abolitionist Movement, the Suffrage Movement, and the modern Civil Rights movement.
All candidates must have a B.A. and/or certification in a relevant field (an advanced degree is preferred) and at least three years of relevant teaching experience, with an especially strong background in literacy and the teaching of writing. They should also be comfortable with the use of instructional technology and with differentiating instruction to meet the needs of a diverse student body.
