VP and Chief Medical Officer

The VP and Chief Medical Officer is a newly created strategic executive role at West serving as the medical domain expert across various interventions and therapeutic areas. This key executive role will be responsible for collaboratively sensing and shaping the various unmet opportunities across medical devices focused on patient interventions and monitoring including drug delivery (point of care and at home), diagnostics (point of care and at home). The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) will also co-chair the Science and Technology Advisory Board along with the Vice President, Applied Science.  The CMO will plan, orchestrate and drive insightful dialogue and deliberations with members of scientific and advisory board about the intersection of science and technology across various interventions and to develop a credible hypothesis for applied research opportunities at West with the goal of serving new markets with compelling products/solutions focused on improving healthcare systems and outcome. Provide ongoing guidance to West R&D and other teams throughout the product development life cycle about the Healthcare professional’s domain knowledge and insights relevant to the product/solution.

The CMO will also play an active role in supporting, guiding and shaping the academia and research hospital collaborations with West and participate in evaluation of various startup companies and medical devices identified by the technology scouting and/or venture investment teams at West.  

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Through deep understanding of the dynamics of patient care, the challenges health systems face and the impact of technology, develops the strategy and ensures the direction and execution of it.
• Serves as a trusted advisor to senior leaders of West on potential opportunities to enhance the patient experience and physician experience in various hospital and at home settings in areas such as patient interventions, drug delivery, diagnostics or other areas where West may have a potential business opportunity.
• Objectively articulates "the voice of the patient and health care professionals" and evaluates all factors relevant to a patient's informed decision making by considering both how patients make decisions and what they value − including what contributes to their satisfaction with devices.
• Takes into account the wide variation in the needs of patients and health care professionals coming from diverse economic, social, and cultural backgrounds across the globe who may be challenged with unique healthcare delivery challenges across multiple diseases, health care systems and geographies. 
• Establishes a unified medical voice among internal and external stakeholders. Represents the ethical and medical voice of the company externally and initiates cross-industry collaboration on medical topics.
• Serves on key committees as appropriate and builds internal awareness for the CMO role to be kept informed of all critical, medically related decisions facing the organization.
• Constantly reviews, monitors and makes decisions regarding the safety of our products through people-driven processes, initiatives and policies that are reinforced by safety standards.
• Fosters a corporate culture of medical and scientific rigor and ethical behavior.
• Defines and establishes consistent global standards for medical and scientific activities.
• Oversees innovations that can help physicians and health systems deliver patient care.
• Brings significant scientific and product insights to West, greater clarity and dialogue with members of the healthcare system and, ultimately, greater value to patients in the form of improved health outcomes.
