Sussex School, a progressive K–8 day school with small class sizes located in Missoula, Montana, seeks a fifth–eighth-grade social studies teacher. The social studies curriculum at Sussex School is centered on creating informed and participatory global citizens. To that end, students explore the past and its legacy, issues of power and governance, fundamentals of rights and justice, and how geography, the environment, and humans have shaped our world. Sussex students learn the interplay of the social sciences in society through inquiry-based projects grounded in essential questions that create depth and meaning.
Middle School social studies at Sussex School follows the idea that social studies is an interdisciplinary class that utilizes the social sciences to engage students in considered thought, critical analysis, and supported argument. Persuasive speaking and writing and using critical analysis frameworks are emphasized. Learning for Justice and Historical Teaching Standards are used to support curriculum decisions.
Degree in education or social-studies-related academic field;
Two (2) years of experience teaching middle school students;
Passion for and a strong understanding of student-centered, differentiated instruction;
Commitment to progressive teaching/learning with or without the use of textbooks and the ability to employ developmentally appropriate teaching methods, materials, and workload expectations for students in grades 5-8;
An ability to work closely and communicate effectively with all Sussex School community stakeholders;
A commitment to appreciating a variety of perspectives offered by individual viewpoints, disciplines, identities and cultural understandings;
Demonstrated ability to support a positive classroom and staff culture.
Teaching license (any state);
Two years of middle school teaching experience in social studies;
Advanced degree in education or social-studies-related field.
