Postdoctoral Associate, Energy and Agricultural Land Use Analytics: SC Johnson College of Business, Charles H. Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management
The Cornell SC Johnson College of Business invites applicants for a Postdoctoral Associate on Energy and Agricultural Land Use Analytics with a 1-year renewable term position in our Applied Economics and Policy area, intended for placement in the Charles H. Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management, with an intended start date of July 1, 2021. The position will be based in Ithaca, NY.

Responsibilities of the position include (1) conducting independent research in coordination with a dynamic interdisciplinary team, (2) collecting, curating, and linking large geospatial datasets on land use, wind and solar energy potential, electricity grid infrastructure and administrative parcel-level information, (3) conducting spatial modelling related to the optimal deployment of renewable energy production on a changing landscape, and (4) drafting manuscripts for submission to peer-review journals.
The Postdoctoral Associate's research will be primarily supported by a grant from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) that seeks to understand and characterize the land use transition from largely agricultural land use to renewable energy (e.g. solar and wind power) in NY state. This research will help inform critical stakeholders in the state regarding the feasibility and nature of the tradeoffs in achieving the mandates to make NY state carbon neutral by 2050.
The position allows a creative and self-motivated candidate to lead several research studies within the overall confines of the supporting grant. This means the candidate has the possibility to pursue economic, agri-environmental, or rural/urban planning aspects of the project depending on the candidate's training and interests.
The ideal candidate will possess a PhD in geography, regional science, data science or related field, and should have a demonstrated ability to manipulate, combine and analyze large geospatial datasets of heterogeneous formats (raster, point and parcel-level polygon data). Training in large-scale optimization and other quantitative techniques, as well as a demonstrated interest in agricultural land use, renewable energy, quantitative urban planning, and data analytics are desirable.
The candidate should have a strong record conducting independent research and scholarly activities including publication in peer-reviewed journals and a commitment to transparent and reproducible research. Finally, the candidate should be comfortable interacting in an interdisciplinary environment working collaboratively with economists, agricultural ecologists, engineers, and hydrologists, and in communicating with stakeholders in NY state. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are necessary.
Salary is commensurate with experience.
The Cornell SC Johnson College of Business (established on July 1, 2016) combines three Schools: the Samuel Curtis Johnson Graduate School of Management (Johnson), the Charles H. Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management (Dyson), and the School of Hotel Administration (Hotel School). Dyson houses a top-ranked undergraduate business program as well as graduate programs that award Ph.D., M.S. and M.P.S. degrees. Areas of faculty research include management; environmental, energy and resource economics; food and agricultural economics; and international and development economics.
