Santa Fe School for the Arts & Sciences (SFSAS), an expeditionary learning school, is seeking a full-time innovative, dynamic, collaborative middle school history teacher with a strong background in teaching middle school and in teaching history, geography, and culture for the 2021-22 school year.
We are especially interested in candidates who are mindful and enthusiastic about cross-disciplinary connections, particularly with the humanities (English/History) team to support future program innovations and create learning expeditions that honor current events and our commitment to racial justice and equality.
The successful candidate will understand the developmental needs of adolescents (ages 12-14) and combine their knowledge of history, geography and culture, with humor, energy, and a desire to inspire middle school students. They will model and promote the school’s character traits of compassion, courage, respect, trust, honesty and stewardship. Our school upholds the values of diversity and inclusivity and the successful candidate is able to create a safe and nurturing learning environment in which all students are respected. Additionally, the candidate must be flexible and an excellent communicator and collaborator. A deep understanding of middle school pedagogy and a commitment to the academic and social/emotional growth of students is essential.
The SFSAS middle school history teacher also serves as a middle school advisor for a small group of students. These responsibilities include regular meetings with individual students, being a student advocate, communicating with teachers and families regarding students’ academic and social progress, and other related student supports.
With COVID-19 affecting many children around the globe, the Arts & Sciences middle school program is dedicated to teaching the whole child. Arts & Sciences is committed to keeping our teachers and students safe during the COVID-19 pandemic. We have collaborated with experts in the field to establish a comprehensive health and safety plan, upgraded outdoor campus spaces on our 5 acre campus, and worked closely with our families to make this past year one which made our community stronger. Our school is planning to be on campus with all students in the fall.

Plan and initiate field trips and extracurricular activities

Teachers at Arts & Sciences develop a culture where professional development is expected and embedded in the daily fabric of our school. Professional development includes large group presentations, grade level or team meetings, workshops, peer observations, team teaching, and offsite institutes and workshops.
Qualifications and Attributes
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in History (U.S. and/or World), the Classics, Social Sciences or Social Sciences Education or related field
Experience working with Middle School students as a history teacher or related subject area
A passion for history/social sciences
Understanding of learning styles and differentiated instruction
Ability to design hands-on, experiential learning activities that advance learning and present real-life opportunities
Ability to work with technology to support, supplement and enhance teaching and learning
Affinity and enthusiasm for working with adolescents
Excellent communication skills
