Xavier University of Louisiana, a Catholic and Historically Black University, seeks to hire a tenure-track, full-time, assistant professor in the African American and African Cultural Studies (AAADCS) for the 2022-23 academic year beginning January 2022. The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. in an interdisciplinary field ranging from humanities and social sciences discipline and whose scholarship approaches Africana and Black Studies from an international or global perspective. Degree at time of application or official notification of completion of the doctoral degree is required by December 2021.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate potential for excellence in teaching and research with undergraduate students. Teaching responsibilities include teaching survey courses and developing courses within the area(s) of specialization suitable for undergraduates. Applications are encouraged from applicants with a strong background in areas such as:
Black radical thought and critical race theory in international, transnational, diasporic or global perspective;
African migration and refugee studies including the politics of citizenship, xenophobia, and anti-Black racism around the world;
African philosophy, Caribbean theory, and the global production of knowledge about sub-Saharan African cultures, resources, histories, and peoples;
Comparative studies of blackness, institutional racism, state sanctioned anti-Black violence, environmental racism, plantation cultures, and global carceral geographies;
Transnational and global projects of social justice, political organization, solidarity, and coalition building, including through the use of new and old media;
Global circulation and consumption of Black, African, and African diasporic culture and cultural artifacts whether in museums, popular culture, or performance culture;
Black space, architecture, urban design, global cities, and Black cosmopolitanism; and
Scholars may focus on Anglophone or non-Anglophone contexts, and their research may cover the lived experiences of people of African descent in any part of the world. The program is particularly interested in candidates who have experience working with students from diverse backgrounds, minimizing barriers, and increasing equity and completion rates between members of different demographic groups.
About our Department and the Position
The African-American and African Diaspora Cultural Studies program is a new major program designed to provide a holistic approach to undergraduate-level training in African-American studies. The program offers potential students a comprehensive foundation in multiple interdisciplinary fields focused on the African-American experience in the global world. The program will be housed in the History department.
Teach undergraduate AAADCS courses. Mode of instruction may include in-person, hybrid, remote, and/or any combination thereof.
Teach upper-level AAADCS courses in his/her specialized field.
Supervise, mentor, and advise undergraduate students.
Advise students in the AAADCS major.
Assist with providing leadership and counsel for the AAADCS student organizations in the program.
Participate in service activities for the department, university, and community
Ph.D. in a with an interdisciplinary field emphasis in any area of health and medicine.
Strong commitment to teaching 4-4 teaching load.
Ability to develop and teach face-to-face as well as online classes
Demonstrated a strong potential for excellence in teaching and mentoring undergraduate students is essential.
Established record of research productivity that complements AAADCS research.
Demonstrated ability to teach in the areas outlined above for strong background.
Demonstrated commitment to working successfully with a diverse student population.
Successful experience teaching undergraduate courses in history focused on the intersections of race, class, gender, and political history.
Experience with work that embraces interdisciplinary themes, public-facing scholarship, and/or digital humanities.
Successful experience teaching to a diverse student body and knowledge of effective strategies (e.g. culturally responsive or inclusive pedagogy, awareness of issues that may affect the success of minoritized students) supporting underrepresented groups.
Awareness of pedagogical best practices and ongoing commitment to developing and maintaining knowledge in this area.
Xavier University of Louisiana, founded by St. Katharine Drexel and the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament in 1925, is Catholic and historically Black.
