Position Summary The Metallurgical and Materials Engineering department is recruiting multiple tenure track faculty positions at the rank of Assistant/Associate. The following areas of research expertise are to be emphasized in the search:
• Fusion based additive manufacturing
• Solid-state additive manufacturing

Detailed Position Information
The Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering at The University of Alabama invites applications for multiple tenure-track faculty positions across all domains relevant to metallurgical and materials science and engineering. Candidates with particular research interests and expertise in advanced manufacturing of metallic materials that involve pursuit of a fundamental understanding of the processing-structure-property-performance relations for a variety of material systems, including experimental, modeling and simulation, and theoretical approaches, are of particular interest for one or more of these open positions. Those applicants with a focus on either fusion-based or solid-state additive manufacturing or both are also strongly encouraged to apply.

The Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering research and educational efforts span a wide range of topics from solidification and casting of metals to advanced characterization of materials to development of novel functional materials including solar cells and batteries More information about the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering can be found at http://mte.eng.ua.edu. The department’s research portfolio has continued to rapidly expanded over the last few years, along with an unprecedented growth in research funding, doctoral student enrollment, and research facility infrastructure. For example, recent experimental capability additions in the department include an atomization facility for the production of metallic powders (http://aaf.ua.edu), a brand new Gleeble 3500 instrument for thermomechanical testing of metallic materials, and a newly reinvigorated foundry for both research and education. The department prides itself in its highly interdisciplinary and collegial research atmosphere. Extensive collaboration opportunities exist within the department and across the College of Engineering and university as a whole.
Applicants must have an earned doctorate (Ph.D.) in materials science and engineering, metallurgy, or another closely related field. Minimum Qualifications Doctoral degree from an accredited institution in relevant fields (e.g. metallurgical engineering, materials science and engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, etc.) with a demonstrated record of achievement in teaching, academic research, and service. Applicants must have conducted prior research work and produced scholarly publications in refereed and other professional journals. Applicants must also meet all university criteria for appointment to the rank of assistant or associate professor.
Preferred Qualifications • PhD in metallurgical engineering, materials science and engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, physics, or a closely related field from an accredited institution.
• Have a demonstrated record of high quality research and scholarly publications.
• Post-doctoral experience or other similar post-graduate experience for candidates applying for a position as an assistant professor.
• Experience in the research proposal writing process.
• Some demonstrated teaching experience at the university/college level for either assistant or associate professor candidates.
• Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
• For those candidates applying for associate professor, a strong record of both external grant funding and scholarship as demonstrated through refereed journal publications. Their scholarship should be recognized at a national level.
