The Department of Spanish and Portuguese at New York University invites applicants for an assistant professor tenure-track position in Luso-Afro-Brazilian studies, with a focus on Black South Atlantic studies and Afro-diasporic formations in the Portuguese-speaking world. This search is part of a cluster hire in Black Diaspora Literary Studies coordinated with the Departments of English, French, and Comparative Literature. The successful candidate will teach and advise in Luso-Afro-Brazilian studies in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, including teaching undergraduate and graduate courses conducted in Portuguese and English and survey courses in diverse forms of cultural production across the Luso-Afro-Brazilian world.

Compensation:
In compliance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $70,000 - $120,000. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
The Department will consider applicants working in any period or area of inquiry within this field, which encompasses the complex network of creolizations and transculturations making up the historical geography of the Luso-Atlantic, including the cultural productions of Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, and São Tomé and Príncipe, as well as Afro-diasporic cultural forms and currents of postcolonial thought in Portuguese and Brazilian culture.
Our department is composed of a diverse group of scholars who have worked together to create a rigorous and inclusive environment for research and teaching. Faculty work in literature, history, philosophy, and a range of interrelated areas including archival studies, animal studies, sexuality studies, performance studies, memory studies, and environmental aesthetics, while also encouraging new approaches to questions of visual media, print culture, and sound. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate with many units and projects adjacent to the department, including NYU's Study-Abroad program in Recife, Brazil, as well as the Center of Latin American and Caribbean Studies, the Center for the Study of Africa and the African Diaspora, the Hemispheric Institute, the King Juan Carlos I of Spain Center, and the Center for the Humanities.
