The Department of Geology, Geography, and Environment at Calvin University invites applications for a three-year, renewable, full-time geology instructor, beginning August 15, 2023.
REQUIREMENTS
Ideal candidates will hold a PhD in geology or a related field. Candidates with a master’s degree in geology and five years of relevant experience will also be considered. Candidates are expected to demonstrate excellence in teaching a range of courses at the undergraduate level. The university will prioritize candidates with broad interdisciplinary interests, demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, ability to integrate questions of meaning, significance, and ethics into all course content.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The primary responsibilities of this position will be teaching undergraduate courses and directing the Bruce Dice Mineralogical Museum. Teaching assignments include introduction to geology and mineralogy, with associated lab sections plus additional courses depending upon the expertise of the successful candidate. We are particularly interested in candidates ready to teach tectonics and igneous and metamorphic petrology. This position will include 32 credit hours per academic year, which is typically four courses and associated lab sections per year including Dice Museum work. There are no expectations of pursuing scholarship or serving on university-wide committees, but active participation in the department’s faculty activities such as advising, faculty meetings, and committees is expected.

The geology program is part of the dynamic and interdisciplinary GEO department which includes geography, environmental science, and environmental studies programs. The geology program equips students in foundations of geoscience and prepares them for vocations in the environment, industry, and academia. Faculty are committed to excellent teaching and robust research agendas.
