Position Summary:

The Department of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences (DEOHS) at the University of Washington (UW) School of Public Health seeks an outstanding Postdoctoral Scholar to assist in a range of environmental epidemiology and climate and health projects. These projects include evaluating the relationship between wildfire-related air pollution, wildfire disasters, related power outages and health. They also encompass linkage of 1940 birth locations with social and environmental stressors and late-life cognitive decline and dementia. All projects include evaluations of environmental justice.

This work will require a range of quantitative skills and provide the opportunity to gain experience working with large longitudinal datasets (including electronic health record data), conducting spatial analyses, and writing manuscripts. There will be opportunities to build out additional projects using the available datasets.

The effort will require an outstanding candidate who has experience using R Statistical Software, can assemble and clean datasets, link spatial datasets over time, produce maps and other publication-quality figures, conduct descriptive analyses with spatial and longitudinal data, uses (or wishes to learn) Github for version control and to promote reproducibility, complete literature searches and assist in manuscript writing. Experience using causal inference methods is preferable. The successful candidate will apply their skills in a team-oriented environment. A critical thinker who enjoys working on a range of topics as part of a team will fit well.

The successful candidate will receive an academic appointment as a Postdoctoral Scholar. The position is intended to extend professional training for a candidate who recently received a terminal Ph.D. degree or foreign equivalent. Opportunities for continued training are available. The position will work directly with Dr. Joan Casey of DEOHS, with regular and direct conversations with other faculty and staff.

The position is based at the University of Washington in Seattle, WA. Working in-person in Seattle is preferred, though a fully remote appointment could be considered. Periodic travel within Washington State and around the U.S. to carry out research and participate in meetings will be required. The position is for one year, with reappointment to a second year contingent upon satisfactory performance. The desired start date is Spring or Summer 2023.

Salary: The salary range for this position is $5,833 - $6,667 per month ($70,000 - $80,000 per year).

Required Qualifications:

• PhD or foreign equivalent in Environmental Health Sciences, Geography, Biostatistics, Biology, Engineering, Epidemiology, Demography, Computer Science, or related field.
• Experience in the programming language R is required.

Desired Qualifications:

• Persons with a strong background and interest in spatial statistics, survival analyses, air pollution epidemiology, and causal inference are encouraged to apply.
