FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT
The Department of Geography and Environmental Science ( http://www.geo.hunter.cuny.edu/ ) at Hunter College of The City University of New York invites applications for a position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor in Human Geography with a focus on geographies of race. This is a one year full-time tenure-track appointment beginning August 2023 pending final college approval.
The position involves teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in their area of specialization, conducting research, contributing to departmental governance, and participating in university programs. Possible research areas may include but are not limited to one or more of the following: Black Geographies/ Black Ecologies or related themes; vulnerabilities to the climate crisis and sustainability; environmental justice; community resilience; housing; financialization; policing or displacement/ gentrification. Intersections with indigenous and Latinx studies as well as research areas that complement or enhance the strengths of the department in urban sustainability and GIS/Remote sensing are welcome.
The candidate will be expected to excel in their research agenda and to contribute to research synergies within the department, Hunter College, and CUNY. The research statement should include examples of ongoing and/or potential collaborative research, in particular collaborations they would expect and plan to develop within the department in the future.
The new hire will add a crucial focus on geographic dimensions of systemic racism to our undergraduate Geography and Environmental Studies programs as well as to our Master???s programs in Geography and GeoInformatics. The candidate is invited to share ideas about innovative courses they would like to teach, in addition to teaching introductory courses in geography and/or environmental studies. Courses in the successful candidate???s area of specialization could qualify for Hunter College Pluralism and Diversity requirement and can be cross-listed with other departments.
Research and teaching synergies may involve Africana and Puerto Rican/Latino Studies, Urban Affairs and Planning, Women and Gender Studies, Public Policy, and Human Rights programs as well as School of Urban Public Health and School of Social Work. The successful candidate may also be able to take advantage of CUNY Black, Race and Ethnic Studies Initiative (BRESI) inaugurated in 2022. There is an option to join the doctoral faculty of the Earth and Environmental Science Ph.D. program at the CUNY Graduate Center.
Located on the 68 th Street campus on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, the diverse faculty of the Geography and Environmental Science Department at Hunter works closely with students and each other in an open and collegial atmosphere. QUALIFICATIONS
For Assistant & Associate Professor:
Ph.D. degree in area(s) of experience or equivalent. Also required are the ability to teach successfully, demonstrate scholarship or achievement, and ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.
We invite scholars who examine the effects of space and place as well as human-environmental relationships on the (re)production of racial inequalities. Candidates must demonstrate excellence or a strong promise of excellence in research, publication, and teaching.
For appointment as an assistant professor, applicants must have a Ph.D. in hand by the position???s starting date. For appointment as an associate professor, a substantial publication record and teaching experience are required.
VACCINE REQUIREMENT

Salary commensurate with education and experience.
