Detailed Position Information The College of Community Health Sciences (CCHS) at The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa seeks an experienced leader to serve as Chair of the Department of Community Medicine and Population Health (CMPH). Full Professor, tenured or tenure earning track candidates will be considered. In addition to serving as Chair and appointment in the College of Community Health Science, the selected candidate will hold an adjunct appointment with the University of Alabama School of Medicine. As chair of CMPH, the successful candidate will report directly to the Dean of CCHS and have ultimate oversight of the department, including research, educational and service components. Additional responsibilities include fiscal management of CMPH, faculty recruitment, retention and development, and provide leadership resources to support and advance the department’s education and research initiatives.
CMPH currently has 13 faculty from a variety of health-related research backgrounds and interests and who serve as teaching faculty for the department’s Master of Science in Population Health Sciences Program. The CMPH fosters student-centered learning for early and advanced students in medicine, students of other health professions, and practicing health professionals. Further, CMPH faculty conduct applied, evidence-based research in population health, working to improve health and well-being through community engagement in rural and other underserved areas. CMPH students learn about social and other determinants of health and how to affect these factors to improve the well-being of individuals and populations. Our courses are designed to help develop the knowledge and skills necessary to study and improve patient-reported outcomes, investigate policies related to health, examine social determinants of health, and transition to value-based payment models. Further, our program emphasizes a community-based approach to improve population health. We provide students with the advanced statistical skills needed for a successful research career in population health data analysis and informatics.
Population health is an interdisciplinary field that integrates clinical care and public health practices to prevent, reduce and manage human disease. The online and in-person Master of Science in Population Health Sciences program focuses on the integration of clinical care and public health practices to prevent, reduce and manage human disease. The program addresses the educational needs of professionals from diverse backgrounds, including: • Social and behavioral scientists interested in health outcomes research. • Providers seeking additional training in the structure and delivery of health care in an evolving system. • Hospital administrators and office managers looking to expand current roles and responsibilities in clinical settings. • Anyone in the health care field interested in identifying best practices to adhere to value-based payment systems in an effort to increase reimbursement rates and improve health outcomes.
POSITION: We are recruiting a Chair to guide departmental growth, leading faculty to excel in research productivity and provide vision to bring innovation to existing educational programs and build future doctoral education opportunities. The Chair will provide direction and oversight of all aspects of departmental functions, including finances, human resources, and governance structures. Further, the Chair will work with the Dean and department faculty to assure an infrastructure and culture that promote academic career development.
Minimum Qualifications The successful candidate will hold a PhD in a health-related field, such as Public Health, Psychology, Human Development, Social Work, etc.
Preferred Qualifications Strong preference will be offered to candidates with at least five years of experience in an academic leadership role. The ideal candidate will have a successful track record in funded research, mentoring junior faculty to develop their own research programs, and experience engaging students and faculty in scholarly activities. Further, successful candidates will be comfortable fostering collaborative working relationships with colleagues and community partners, within the department, across the college, and the University. About the Division/College/School The College of Community Health Sciences (CCHS) was founded in 1972 by William Willard, MD, author of the “Willard Report” and considered the “Father of Family Medicine,” with a mandate to train family physicians for Alabama, particularly its rural areas. The College also provides medical student education as the Tuscaloosa Regional Campus of the four-campus University of Alabama School of Medicine, based at UAB in Birmingham. CCHS is sponsor of the UA Family Medicine Residency and seven fellowships for family physicians.
