Located just north of Seattle in Shoreline, Washington, The Evergreen School has been educating highly capable, creative learners for 60 years. The Opportunity The director of diversity and community engagement will be in charge of running a robust program in a school that is committed to the work coming out of the Diversity Office. The school is looking for someone who brings experience and passion for diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging work and is excited to help our students, faculty/staff, parents/guardians and leadership grow in these areas.
The school seeks candidates who demonstrate a commitment to anti-bias and anti-racism work and to fostering a diverse and inclusive learning community that is responsive toward all differences including but not limited to race, ethnicity, national origin, geography, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, physical ability, learning styles and marital, parental or economic status.
Duties and Responsibilities
Co-Lead our Strategic Growth Initiative (SGI) for Access and Inclusion (A&I). Advise the board and A&I SGI committee members on the pulse of the community and make recommendations for how to approach the long-term strategic plans and goals as it relates to eliminating the barriers to access and inclusion in our school.
Meet with families, and adult constituents within the community to ensure we have an inclusive, welcoming community.
Partner with the head of school and Senior Leadership Team to strengthen our hiring practices, implementing mandatory anti-bias training for anyone serving on a hiring committee.
Serve as a member of board Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee, and meet with the chair of the committee to discuss board diversity work and make recommendations/share resources.
Design, facilitate and lead anti-racism, anti-bias, equity, and cultural competency workshops for the board, Senior Leadership Team, employees and parent/guardian community.
Partner with the director of enrollment management to broaden the diversity of the applicant pool which could include attending community events in the evening and weekend.
Serve as a member and contributor on a variety of committees and teams, including but not limited to the Senior Leadership Team, Financial Aid Committee, Education Admin Committee, Admissions Committee, various hiring committees.
Supervise the program assistant to the Diversity Office. Provide guidance and support around best practices as it relates to diversity, equity and inclusion, and their role.
Serve as a resource and support to our FaST program, which supports families who receive 95%+ financial aid.
Meet with PGA DEI co-chairs and PGA leadership to help guide and support the parent/guardian community affinity groups, and DEI programming.
Lead our Community Conversation parent/guardian educational series in partnership with the director of communications and director of development.
Serve as a resource and listening ear to faculty who seek advice and support around equity and inclusion issues not related to their classrooms, as well as mentorship.
Meet with and consult with area diversity practitioners in the education field to stay abreast of best practices in diversity, equity and inclusion.
Other duties as assigned.

Hold a bachelor’s degree.
Have a minimum of three to five years of experience working in diversity/equity/inclusion related work, with preference for some experience in an educational setting.
Have a demonstrated ability to plan strategically and thoughtfully, which will help the school to implement long-term action plans as it relates to inclusion and access.
Have demonstrated cultural competence skills that allows them to successfully collaborate across diverse cultures and backgrounds; can build relationships and trust with all students, employees, and families.
Communicate effectively and professionally with a diverse community of children and adults internally and externally, both verbally and in writing.
Have a high level of empathy as well as analytical and organizational skills.
Have a proven track record in building community to deepen the engagement in equity and inclusion work across all constituencies.
Have a proven track record of efficient project management, including initiating and completing multiple tasks, independently or collaboratively as required, supervising personnel, and managing budgets.
Be open to direction and feedback.
Be able to keep information in the strictest of confidence.
Complete work in a timely, accurate and thorough manner and is conscientious about assignments and deadlines.
Have the ability to work under the pressure of frequent deadlines in a fast paced environment.
Can be relied upon to dependably report to work on time and on schedule.
Currently authorized to work in the US for any employer. No sponsorship is available for this position.

Work Hours and Position Details:
Position follows a 12-month work schedule and includes evening and weekend work from time to time.
This is an exempt, full-time, benefits eligible position that reports to the head of school. The role has a start date of July 1, 2023, with a salary in the range of $120,000-130,000.
