Position Summary The Department of Communication Studies in the College of Communication and Information Sciences at The University of Alabama is seeking dynamic instructors for a faculty position as full-time, non-tenure-track, one-year renewable contract Assistant Professor of Communication Studies to begin August 16, 2023.
Detailed Position Information Ideal candidates will have a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching and service within communication studies. The successful candidate will be able to provide quality instruction to distance learning populations. Appointments to the faculty of The University of Alabama are based on the personnel requirements of the University’s academic programs and on the goal of achieving and maintaining excellence in its teaching, research, and service/academic citizenship activities. - Teach four courses each semester in a range of communication studies courses at the undergraduate and master’s level in both online and face to face modalities. - Establish and maintain a record of teaching excellence for distance learning and main campus students. - Assist with programmatic duties in the distance learning undergraduate and graduate programs. - Mentor undergraduate and graduate students in progress to degree. - Serve on department and college committees as appropriate.
The Department of Communication Studies emphasizes a broad understanding of the power of communication by studying theory and practice in the areas of interpersonal communication, organizational leadership, rhetoric and political discourse, and communication and culture. We are committed to cultivating responsible, informed, and civically minded leaders who will be future leaders in the field of communication. The department consists of about twenty full-time faculty members dedicated to furthering the education of nearly 1,000 undergraduate majors and minors. Our department is also home to a renowned forensics program and a cutting-edge Speaking Studio.
About the COM Distance Learning Programs
The department supports two distance learning programs, an MA in Communication Studies with an emphasis in Organizational Leadership and an undergraduate Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication Studies. The on-campus MA in COM program has roughly thirty enrolled students and the distance learning MA in COM program, a nationally recognized program with an Organizational Leadership emphasis, has about 140 enrolled students.

Minimum Qualifications Completed Ph.D. in Communication (or a related field with at least 18 credit hours in the discipline s) by August 15, 2023. - Record of teaching excellence in both online and face-to-face environments. - Qualifications to teach at the undergraduate level and potential to teach at the graduate level. - Ability to be an active and involved member of a diverse and collaborative faculty team.
