The Department of Environmental Studies at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for an Associate Teaching Professor in Geographic Information Science teaching and research. This position will entail three key roles intended to support a growing geospatial program in the Department of Environmental Studies: 1) Teach undergraduate, graduate, and professional development courses in Geographic Information and Spatial Data Science including geographic information systems, remote sensing, spatial data analysis, spatial statistics, enterprise spatial databases and GIS programming (web and desktop); 2) Develop and manage new GIS and geospatial graduate curricula, and 3) Maintain a record of scholarly activity, such as pedagogical innovation or disciplinary research, and ideally secure external funding to support this work. We particularly welcome candidates who have experience developing new GIS and spatial training curricula, whose education, professional activities, and teaching are informed by environmental problem solving, transdisciplinary spatial research initiatives, and broad engagement with the professional environmental and geospatial community.
We seek a scholar who will teach introductory and advanced academic courses at the undergraduate, graduate, and professional development level that will help students prepare for, acquire, analyze, and visualize spatial data with a focus on techniques for solving complex geographic problems. Additional courses will be taught in topical areas including but not limited to geospatial software development, web mapping, enterprise spatial databases, 3D systems, drones and aerial technologies, field-based surveying systems, and geospatial server infrastructure and management. In addition, the candidate will develop and teach a variable number of non-academic, short-courses as part of the Center for Integrated Spatial Research (CISR) professional development geospatial training program. We are particularly interested in candidates who have demonstrated experience teaching advanced spatial analysis, spatial statistics, geospatial programming (Python, R) and web-based mapping. Prior experience administering and managing an academic or non-academic training program is considered highly desirable.
The candidate will also have experience developing and maintaining complex geographic information solutions for a diverse array of end users through CISR. The successful candidate will have experience in developing geospatial solutions including custom application development, automated geoprocessing workflows, and server-based services in an ESRI environment. Use of Python, R, SQL, and ArcGIS to develop scalable geospatial solutions is preferred. In addition, the candidate should demonstrate an understanding of web-based application development and should be able to validate experience with front end web programming languages (HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, JSON) and mapping APIs (ArcGIS JavaScript API, Leaflet). Successful candidates should also have expertise in the design and deployment of web application back end components including ArcGIS Enterprise (Server, Portal, Online), enterprise databases (PostgreSQL and PostGIS, SQL Server), geospatial web services (ArcGIS Map, Feature, Image, Geoprocessing, Vector Tile, WFS, WMS, WMTS), and administration via REST and the ArcGIS API for Python. Knowledge and experience with Windows Server (2019, 2016, 2012) administration, including Active Directory, considered a plus.
The position requires demonstrated excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching among a broad and diverse range of students, excellence in professional activities, and applicants are also expected to participate in service at a variety of levels, including program, school, university and community service.
